Katoomba: Rally takes stand on racism

Racism is NOT welcome here! Coverage of our solidarity gathering with First Nations groups against racism in the @bmgazette

đź“° Press release:

Between 80–100 people gathered on Carrington Lawn in Katoomba on Saturday 13 September as part of a national call for action by grassroots First Nations groups, with rallies taking place across the country in response to recent racist neo-Nazi attacks on Camp Sovereignty in Naarm/Melbourne.
Speakers and participants emphasised that racism, fascism, and white supremacy have no place in the Blue Mountains, or anywhere on this land. The rally connected local struggles for justice with global calls to end colonisation, genocide and state violence. Speakers drew links between the fight for Indigenous sovereignty here and the struggle for Palestinian liberation, affirming that land rights, truth telling and self-determination are central to both. As participants chanted “always was, always will be Aboriginal land”.

The Katoomba solidarity gathering event was organised by Mountains for Palestine in solidarity with Blak Caucus. Organiser Aaisha Slee said:
“People experience racism every day in our community. It’s important that we come together to resist racism, fascism and white supremacy in all its forms. We are with First Nations people in their fight for justice. Our solidarity matters.”

The community also called for Blue Mountains City Council to follow the lead of other local councils and implement Racism Not Welcome signs across the region, to ensure visibility and solidarity with racialised people.
