Western Australians are forgoing basic needs like meals, hygiene and medical appointments in a desperate bid to pay the mortgage or rent.
That’s what was revealed today in a devastating new report by national housing campaign Everybody’s Home, which surveyed 1,100 people around Australia affected by the housing crisis.
Among the other most common measures reported among West Australian survey respondents are relying on credit, falling behind on bills, and minimising use of heating and cooling – which, if you’ve ever lived in a poorly insulated house in the height of summer or winter, you’ll know just how extreme a sacrifice this is.
It is absolutely devastating that, here in one of the wealthiest states in the world, people are showering once a week or eating one meal a day just to try to keep a roof over their heads.
This is nothing less than a catastrophic failure of government. The Cook Labor Government should absolutely hang their heads in shame at what this report reflects back to them.
We need minimum rental standards – now. Rent caps – now. An end to no-cause evictions – now. Significant investment in public housing – now. Now now now.
