For months, the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has heard witnesses — almost invariably supporters of Israel — who have downplayed the scale of death in Gaza, suggested that Palestinian flags, keffiyehs and even Arabic script constitute antisemitism, and repeatedly blurred distinctions between Jewish identity, political Zionism and the actions of the Israeli state. From its inception, the commission has served to silence the Palestine solidarity movement.
In the face of these attacks, Yasmine Johnson, national co-convenor of Students for Palestine and an organiser of the Sydney University student encampment, appeared at the commission last month to defend the Palestine solidarity movement against such slander.
Alongside attacks on student protests and academic freedom, the commission has also heard testimony from the head of APRA, the regulatory body for health professionals, defending its adoption of the IHRA definition, which equates anti-Zionism with antisemitism.
