Woodside renews pursuit of activists whose hoax gas stunt evacuated Perth headquarters

ICYMI: Woodside has sensationally reignited litigation against peaceful campaigners in the WA Supreme Court for asserted lost earnings and brand damage following a 2023 protest that evacuated its corporate headquarters in Boorloo/Perth.

The protest was to bring attention to the harmful effects of Woodside’s gas expansion on climate and cultural heritage.

Woodside, the largest oil and gas company in Australia, says that other people were involved in the peaceful protest three years ago and is asking the WA Supreme Court to order Emil Davey, Joana Partyka and Kristen Morrissey to reveal the identities of any other such people. 

This is the first time since the Gunns 20 case in Tasmania in 2005 that a large resources company has sought to target an entire activist campaign using Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (known as a SLAPP suit). A SLAPP is a case brought or legal tactic used by corporate entities to dissuade their critics from public participation, especially where it produces negative publicity, and to intimidate and silence people from exercising their democratic rights.
